The BBC has blocked the artificial intelligence software behind ChatGPT from accessing or using its content.
The move brings the BBC into line with Reuters, Getty Images and other content providers who have taken similar steps on copyright and privacy issues. Artificial intelligence can reuse content to create new text, images, and more from data.
Rhodri Talfan-Davies, the BBC’s national director, said the BBC was “taking steps to protect the interests of fee payers as this new technology evolves”.
“We do not believe we are currently ‘scraping’ BBC data without permission. . . Training “artificial AI” models is in the public interest, and we want to agree a more structured and sustainable approach with technology companies. ”
Companies are now trying to devise strategies that can monetize AI-enabled content. But like the development of the Internet, this plan seeks to control something that is nearly impossible to limit.
