Dusty Launches New Version Of Construction Layout Robot

Dusty’s FieldPrinter, launched in 2019, added a clever new dimension to the world of construction automation. Autonomous mobile robots have brought blueprints into the real world by drawing outlines in chalk on the jobsite floor, eliminating much of the guess work in jobs you don’t really want to guess. The first generation of bots has so far printed more than 91 million square feet, according to the company.

Today, the Bay Area-based startup is launching its sequel. As in the previous work, field printer 2 Showing big, kind eyes. Anthropomorphism is a surprisingly effective way to integrate automation into the workplace. This little robot is smaller than the first generation and better able to avoid obstacles.

Now prints closer to the edges, allowing for “shadow printing” behind columns. This 23-pound robot has a wider print head and numerous onboard sensors for improved navigation. It can also be controlled from an iPad.

Today’s news also marks the arrival of the FieldPrint platform, which is centered around BIM-to-Field. This effectively introduces digital information to the actual construction site.

“Our new FieldPrint platform supports seamless data flow from the design stage to the field and back to the trailer,” said Tessa Lau, co-founder and CEO. “Dusty is more than just a robot, it provides an integrated software + hardware solution that architects, designers, and field operators rely on for unparalleled accuracy, communication, and efficiency.”

Construction is now becoming one of the largest categories for robotics. After all, in the US alone it is a $2 trillion industry. There are several aspects of the construction process that are perfect for automation, especially in times of talent shortages. As expected, Dusty’s innovative solution has several competitors, including most notably his SitePrint from HP.
