We investigate the potential impact of the Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) model and related technologies on the U.S. labor market. Use a new rubric to evaluate occupations based on their correspondence with her GPT features, which incorporates both human expertise and GPT-4 classification. Our findings show that approximately 80% of U.S. employees will have at least 10% of their work affected by the implementation of GPT, while approximately 19% of workers will have at least 50% of their work affected. may be affected. The impact will be across all wage levels, with higher-income occupations likely to be more affected. Notably, the impact is not limited to industries with higher recent productivity growth. We argue that generative pre-trained transformers exhibit characteristics of general purpose technology (GPT), suggesting that these models can have significant economic, social, and policy impacts. I conclude.
