At the top of Instagram’s Messages tab, there’s a toggle button to turn on end-to-end encryption, which protects your messages from unwanted eyes like metas and governments. However, once you turn on this feature, you will no longer see the option to start an AI chat. When you click the information button (the “i” circle icon) in the chat, the “Use end-to-end encryption” option will be grayed out. Clicking this will bring up a window that says “End-to-end encryption is not yet available for some people.” Then it says “Unable to add” the AI persona to the chat. One of the main privacy concerns with the rise of generative AI is the large amount of data that is collected to train models and provide companies with detailed insights about users. This suggests that while certain information about the message can be accessed by the AI (still not suitable for privacy), the content of the message is private. But this is unconfirmed, especially given the ambiguity of the meta Generated AI Privacy PolicyIt says, “When you chat with the AI, Meta uses the messages you send to train the AI model and may help improve the AI.”

Mashable reached out to Meta to confirm that AI messages on Instagram are not end-to-end encrypted, and also clarified whether AI messages on WhatsApp and Messenger are end-to-end encrypted. . Last spring, OpenAI launched an opt-out feature for ChatGPT. This gives users the option to block their data from being used to train models. However, other AI chatbots such as Google Bard and Microsoft Bing do not have such an opt-out feature, although they do have the ability to delete activity.
