Apple will unveil a new set of AI capabilities for Apple devices at WWDC on June 10. BloombergMark Garman Reports It will officially be called “Apple Intelligence.”
The AI feature is expected to come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. The feature is opt-in, meaning Apple won’t force it on users if they don’t want it.
Given the processing requirements of AI, users will need one of the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 models launching this year to use it. If you have an iPad or Mac, you’ll need at least a model with the M1 chip. Apple’s AI capabilities will be powered by its own technology and tools from OpenAI, but the company is also planning to partner with OpenAI to power chatbots like ChatGPT.
Apple Intelligence is expected to handle basic AI tasks and will primarily run on-device. In other words, the models will be run by the device’s on-board processor, not the cloud. It’s not clear what the criteria for a basic task will be, but Apple Intelligence is said to include code that determines whether a request can be processed on-device or if Apple’s servers are required.
Here are some of the major AI-related new features and changes we’ve covered so far that have been rumored or previewed for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Gurman says AI features will take up about half of Apple’s WWDC keynote, which begins at 10 a.m. Pacific time on June 10.
