Openai Announces Leadership Change

I’m returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as CTO. The new initial board consists of Brett Taylor (chair), Larry Summers, and Adam DeAngelo.

I have never been more excited about the future. We are incredibly grateful for everyone’s hard work during these uncertain and unprecedented times, and believe our resilience and spirit is unique in the industry. We feel very good about our chances of success in achieving our mission.

Before I explain further, I would like to express my gratitude.

I love and respect Ilya. I think he is a guiding light in this field and a gem of a human being. I have no ill will towards him at all. Although Ilya will no longer serve on the board, we are looking to continue our collaboration and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI.

Thank you to Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to arrive at this solution that best fits our mission. I am excited to continue working with Adam and am extremely grateful to Helen and Tasha for their hard work in this process.

We would also like to thank Mr. Emmett for his important and constructive role in reaching this result. It was clear that Mr. Emmett is passionate about balancing the safety of his AI with the interests of his stakeholders.

Mila has done a great job through all of this, selflessly serving the mission, team, and company. She is a great leader and OpenAI is not her OpenAI without her. thank you.

Greg and I are partners in running this company. I don’t know yet how to communicate that on the org chart, but I plan on doing so. For now, I just wanted to make something clear. I want to thank you all for everything you’ve done from the beginning and how you’ve handled things from the moment this started until last week.

The management team, including Mila, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lillian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, and Pat, is clearly prepared to run the company without any help. is completed. myself. They say one way he evaluates a CEO is how he selects and trains potential successors. On this metric, I’m doing much better than I thought I would. It’s clear to me that the company is in great hands, and I hope this is abundantly clear to you as well. Thank you everyone.

Jakub, Szymon, and Aleksander are extraordinary talents, and we are thrilled to have them rejoin us to move us and our research forward. thank you.

To our team: I think books will be written about this period, but I hope they start by saying how amazing our entire team was. Now that we’ve gone through all of this, we haven’t lost a single employee. You stood firm for each other, this company, and our mission. One of the most important things for a team to safely build AGI is the ability to deal with stressful and uncertain situations and maintain good judgment throughout. Top mark. Thank you everyone.

Satya, Kevin, Amy and Brad have been great partners throughout this period and always had the right priorities. They supported us and were ready to welcome us all, even if we did not achieve our primary goal. Our choice to partner with Microsoft was clearly the right one, and we are excited to include them as non-voting observers on our new board. thank you.

Thank you to all our partners and users for your continued support. We really felt the outpouring of support and love and it helped us all get through this situation. The fact that we didn’t lose a single customer motivates us to work even harder for our customers, and we’re all excited to get back to work.

Will Hurd, Brian Chesky, Brett Taylor, and Larry Summers put their lives on the line and made incredible contributions to support this mission. I don’t know how they did it so well, but it really did. thank you.

Ollie has also put his life on hold throughout this time to help out in any way he can, in addition to offering his unconditional love and support as always. Thank you and I love you.

So what’s next?

We have three immediate priorities.

We will advance our research agenda and invest further in our full-stack safety efforts, which are always important to our work. Our research roadmap is clear. It was a wonderfully focused time. I share the excitement you feel. Let’s turn this crisis into an opportunity! I’ll try working with Mira.

We continue to improve and introduce products to serve our customers. It is important that people experience the benefits and promise of AI and have the opportunity to shape it. We continue to believe that great products are the best way to achieve this. I will work with Brad, Jason, and Anna to articulate our unwavering commitment to our users, customers, partners, and governments around the world.

Brett, Larry, and Adam will continue to work hard on the very important task of building a board with diverse perspectives, improving our governance structure, and overseeing an independent review of recent events. . We look forward to working closely with them on these important steps so everyone can have confidence in the stability of his OpenAI.

I’m really looking forward to working with you on the world’s best team and world’s best mission: building profitable AGI.

Love,

Sam
