State Attorney General Asks Fcc To Limit Ai In Telemarketing

bipartisan group of 26 Attorney General releases joint comment Urges the Federal Communications Commission to limit the use of artificial intelligence in telemarketing to protect consumers from unwanted robocalls and robotexts.

The letter was written in response to the FCC’s November investigation into the impact of AI under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which generally prohibits calls using artificial or prerecorded voices.

“The State Attorney’s Office respectfully submits that any type of AI technology that generates human voices should be considered ‘artificial voices’ for purposes of the TCPA,” the attorney general said in a comment. “If TCPA-regulated businesses wish to utilize such technology to make telephone calls to consumers, they must comply with the requirements of the TCPA, including the requirement for prior express written consent.”

State attorneys general wrote that they are willing to work with the FCC on this issue, especially if there is rulemaking regarding AI and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
